Effects of Leaf Blowing and Improper Disposal of Lawn Debris
Enforcement to Begin
Jefferson Parish is embarking on an aggressive parish-wide public awareness
campaign to urge individuals and lawn care services to properly collect and bag their
debris associated with lawn maintenance and landscaping. This process will help
keep the Parish’s drains clean and increase the flow of rain water into our drainage
system. It will also improve the water quality of our lakes, bayous and other
waterways.
The Jefferson Parish Code of Ordinances Section 16-9 makes it unlawful for any
persons to dump, throw, place or otherwise dispose of cut grass, weeds, trees, or
tree limbs, trash, garbage, or debris on any public street, right-of-way or pedestrian
walkway in Jefferson Parish by the use of a leaf blower, rake, broom or any other
means, unless the debris is immediately removed from the street and containerized
for composting or for proper removal and disposal.
Beginning in April, inspectors from the Department of Environmental Affairs will
enforce the ordinance by combing neighborhoods. First time offenders will be issued
a warning and continued violators could be fined up to $500.
Jefferson Parish public works crews clean and flush over 75,000 drains and inlets
within 82,000 acres. To assist Jefferson Parish with this task, we are asking anyone
who witnesses a violation of this ordinance to report the name, address and/or
telephone number of the responsible party immediately to the Department of
Environmental Affairs at 736-6440. Citizens can do so anonymously. If after hours
and on weekends, the public can call 736-6066.
